Boo

So about a month ago, one of my co-workers convinced me to volunteer for the Hood To Coast race. Im not running or anything ridiculous like that, I signed Pancho and myself up to help out at the exchange points, directing traffic, making sure people dont cheat, announcing runners, that kind of thing. My co-worker made it seem as though I would have a say in where and what time I would be volunteering. They even ask you to pick your top three choices and put them on the sign-up sheet. But then they apparently take your name off that sheet and tear it to pieces, because we got nothing we wanted. We are out in the middle of no where (I signed up for the last three exchange points, which are at the beach) and we start at 5:45 am (I signed up to start at 9:30 am).
Thinking we would get what we signed up for, we rented a hotel room at the beach, and rented a car. Turns out our assignment is the same distance from Portland as it is from the beach, so we've saved ourselves absolutely no time by staying at the hotel. Also, by the time we get back to the hotel and get our stuff together, it will be time to check out.
Yay!

Things that make me want to say "Fuck You" to Hood To Coast:
*It isnt even for a cause. None of the money is donated to anything.
*Running enthusiasts, in general, are assholes.
*5:45 in the fucking morning?! Are you kidding me?!
*The people who coordinate the volunteer efforts arent even nice to the volunteers who, basically out of the goodness of their heart (and for a $20 gift certificate to McCormick & Schmicks), make this whole fucking thing possible. At least give me a fake smile while you are being condescending, bitch.

Things that make me want to do it anyway:
*If we dont show up, my co-workers' team gets automatically disqualified, i.e. Chrissy gets fired.
*I am up for a huge raise in the near future.

Oh, Cruel World, why must you hate me so?

Sorry your H2C volunteering experience wasn't good. It does suck that it's for profit, but I think I heard something about how now that Bob Foote has cancer, he's gonna start giving some dough to cancer research or something.

In my experience, running enthusiasts, in general, are definitely not assholes. I guess you got unlucky. I know our team appreciates and makes a point of being courteous to and thanking H2C volunteers. Thanks for volunteering!

My blog clearly needs updating on this subject.
In the end, we had a great time, and as you said, were thanked many times by the runners for volunteering. I guess it was the initial signing up and "training" process that really sucked. We felt suckered a bit because we got the shaft in terms of assignment desirability.
And my apologies, only most running enthusiasts are assholes, certainly not the ones reading my blog. ;)
