I used to think that I must have a problem with authority. For the most part I didnt get along with (and generally didnt like) my teachers, bosses, supervisors, cops and, you know, people with authority.
Recently I've realized that I have a problem with people who have a problem handling authority. There were always those few "cool" teachers, "cool" bosses, and "cool" cops, and recently I've been wondering why I dont seem to have authority issues with these people. For example, currently I have two bosses (long story), and I seem to get along really well with both. It dawned on me that I dont have problems with them because they dont seem to have a problem handling their authority. I feel comfortable around them like I feel comfortable around anyone else. They dont use their authority to make me feel inferior, they dont speak to me in a condescending manner, they dont make me feel like my job is on the line if I mess up, they arent combative when I tell them my concerns or when I come to them with a problem and they certainly dont have the time to micro-manage (and I dont think they would even if they did have the time).
These concepts should not be a lot for an employee to ask, but in reality (and I know, because I have worked for some serious assholes) these kinds of people are kind-of hard to come by.
Its pretty fucked up that you hear so often, "that kid has a problem with authority!" when the truth is "no, asshole, YOU have a problem with authority."
I hope that everyone that abuses their authority eventually wakes up with thier asshole sewn shut and Method Man feeds them to death (and by "eventually" I mean "tomorrow").
