Death Trap

Recent events -and the general fact that I would hate to see any of you plummeting to your death- bring up an area of concern I've had for a while now: The Sellwood Bridge. Please, for the love of god, do not drive across that thing.

The I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis (the one that collapsed) was given a National Bridge Inventory sufficiency rating of 50 in a 2005 inspection; the Sellwood Bridge has been given a National Bridge Inventory sufficiency rating of 2 out of a possible score of 100. This fact is incredibly scary. Read more scary stuff about the bridge here.

I spoke with a bridge engineer at work and he says that a rating of 2 doesnt necessarily mean that the bridge is falling apart, and that many factors are taken into consideration when a bridge is rated, however, since I care about the well-being of my Portland peeps, please consider that thing a death trap.
